Tomhardware used to have a forum for proposed builds. I can't find it, so I'm posting here. If there's a better forum to post on, please let me know.

Currently, I'm running a 2013 build:
Intel i5-3570k overclocked
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ heat sink
16GB of Corsair DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) and Samsung DDR3-1333 (PC3-10600) with 12GB utilization
Samsung 830 Series 120GB SATA-3 SSD hard drive
Western Digital 1 TB SATA-3 HDD
ASUS P8Z77-M microATX motherboard
EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti SSC Gaming ACX 3.0 GDDR5, 4GB
Windows 10 Home at 64 bits
won't boot from NVME per ASUS tech support and my attempts to do so.

I already have a Cooler Master HAF 912 Plus ATX mid-tower case.
I have a bit less than 1 TB of data that is slow to search.

Here's my proposed build purchases:
i7-8700k Coffee Lake 8th Gen
Cooler Master Masterair MA410M heat sink
ASUS TUF Z370 Plus Gaming i or ii (thanks, Gmoney06ss (see below) for the idea of staying with ASUS!)
1TB WD Black NVME m.2 SSD drive (or 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO for the Magician and Data Transfer software benefits)
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 (15-15-15-37) (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15)
but i7-8700k says it works with DDR4-2666

Please give me feedback, especially concerning alternative components.

Thank you

Sounds like a nice build. Feedback will always be generally subjective. If you have the money and your happy it's good, very good. If your looking to save cash. Cut down on the m.2 and get slower ram. 16gb is a perfect amount and I myself run the same. Bar that it's all tip top. Enjoy 😁

Thanks. I was thinking about getting an m.2 at 256 GB for the OS and storage of commonly used files, then using my 1 TD SATA-3 for the rest. I'd save about $70 and could buy the Samsung 970 EVO instead of the WD. I like the Samsung Magician and Data Migration to optimize and back up my OS hard drives. However, the 1 TB Samsung is way pricier than the WD Black.

I also just found this review of Adata's m.2:

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-ssds,3891.html

XPG SX8200 Pro 256GB, 3.5 GB/sec, $60
500GB for $100

Any experience with those m.2? Thanks again!

Didn't see a new gpu, keeping the 1050ti? Definitely looks like a nice build. I like Asus motherboards, but I'm sure either of the two you chose will be equally as good. On the m.2, I'd go 250gb WD black and then grab a 1tb WD blue or Samsung ssd. As far as the ram goes, I've never experienced that brand and would probably go for another better known brand like corsair or Gskill. The 3400 speed unless not much more money than 3200 or 3000, I would probably just grab either of those. From what I've read There s diminishing returns after 3200, and speed doesn't effect Intel much.

That will be a very nice build any way you slice it.

Thanks.

I plan to reuse the 1050ti, although the HDMI is not working.

I recall having Patriot for RAM or a hard drive at some point. Most of my RAM is from Samsung, Corsair, and Micron. I don't notice a difference, though I'm not a RAM expert either.

My two first builds (which are my present builds) are both ASUS motherboards, but tomshardware didn't recommend ASUS motherboards. I read that they're on the declin in popularity. Thanks to your suggestion, I found an ASUS TUF Z370 Plus Gaming i or ii. I also modified the original post accordingly to reflect my change in mobos.

I'm also not going with the ASRock because there is no approved RAM vendor list. I had problems with RAM compatibility with the ASUS so I won't buy a motherboard unless I know what RAM is compatible.

ASUS' Qualified Vendor List (QVL) is current as of 3/6/2019:

https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/PRIME_Z370-A/Memory_QVL.pdf

Strangely, for RAM, Amazon's motherboard compatibility check omitted the Extreme4
