Try
nslookup www.google.com 8.8.8.8

This will force it to use the 8.8.8.8 as you dns server. If this works dns is actually working. Since you can ping the IP you should be able to send DNS requests to it.

You should be able to use
nslookup www.google.com

It will show you which dns you are currently using. If this is working it has to be something with the browser or firewall blocking DNS.
nslookup is working but i don't know what is blocking i checked the firewall

Hi Bill;

I too keep having these issues with wifi and have also run all the solutions above.
If i do get it working again, it won't be long before it's dropping again.
I can run a speedtest and have it at 10 mbs and then rerun it and be lucky to get 1mbs, it is a constant yoyo...yet the status on the adapter says its 130 mbs.
I'm just very confused, we have hispeed unlimited data plan and i use my Alienware M17 R5, (not an outdated laptop) yet the house down the road (that let me use his internet before) can still connect over twice the distance away, while mine is saying i can't.
It just feels like my internet provider is throttling me, cause there is no reason why it shouldn't be working and why i have to keep fighting with it every few hours.
Any help would be great,
ac

BTW....if i ping google 3 times in a row, i will get 3 different results, from all fails to all success and everywhere in between.
It can also vary like below:
Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=119
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=119

Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 15ms, Maximum = 16ms, Average = 15ms

to running gain right away and get

Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=547ms TTL=119
