Your experiences on Neopets

Hi fellow Neopians!

My name is Lee Farabaugh, and I'm in a team of 3 graduate students at
Georgia Tech. We're in a class that explores the design of online
communities and the experiences of community participants. I chose to
study Neopets because of its popularity and because I enjoy it.

Part of my project involves interviewing neopians about their
experiences with Neopets. Would you be willing to be interviewed at a
time convenient to you, over the phone, for about one hour? I will pay
for the call (unless you feel more comfortable calling me). We prefer
to interview adults because they can give consent themselves, but we
can also interview youth who have consent from their parents.

I will write up my findings in a paper for my class, but I will
disguise your identity by changing your username and any identifying
details about you.

This study has been approved by Georgia Tech. If you would like to
share your experiences on the site please go to this URL where you can
read more details about the study and complete the online consent form
(the link below may be broken over two lines):
http://www.cc.gatech.edu/classes/AY2005/cs6470_spring/researchstudy/webconsent_n\
eopets_study.html

After I receive your consent, I will e-mail you to schedule an
interview time at your convenience. If you have any questions, please
contact me and I'd be happy to answer them! We know that scamming is
common on Neopets, so we're happy to allay your fears any way we can.

Thanks,
Lee Farabaugh (lee@cc.gatech.edu)

Hi Jon,

Thank you very much for your comments. We have forwarded them to the
principal investigator on this study, Dr. Amy Bruckman. I am sure she
will appreciate your comments and suggestions for future studies. You
can reach her via email at asb@cc.gatech.edu.

Thank you,

Lee Farabaugh (lee@cc.gatech.edu)

Actually I would be happy to talk to you in Holland. We are interested
in Neopets users from all over the world. I have an international phone
card, which makes it relatively cheap to call almost anywhere. I hope
you'll participate -- you can email me if you have more questions at
lee at cc.gatech.edu. I am flexible and can speak with you at a time
convenient to you (even if it's night-time or early morning for me).

Speaking as someone who has done considerable research into the
qualitative research and research ethics, it strikes me as very odd that
you would choose to provide neither opportunity for repair of any injury,
nor even compensation for any such injury. It sounds very much like a
disclaimer, and that's not something any ethical researcher should need
to encorporate into their design.

Also, you ask for an hour of an adult's time, but offer no money for said
time. Do you think (yes, I do realize that being on NP is a waste in one
sense) that our time has no value at all?

As far as your confidentiality clause goes, if you think that "a
determined and skillful person could potentially break it" because of
quotes included from a blog, then obviously the solution is to not
include quotes from blogs! If you're going to tell someone they'll be
anonymous, then don't turn around and say "well, hopefully you'll be
anonymous, but you might not if we decide to quote you!"

Finally, this is just wrong:
"Since many of the researchers are students, there is a slight chance
that they will make mistakes or not conduct themselves appropriately
during the interview. If this should happen, please contact ..."
No. That's not how it works.
If you don't think whoever you're getting to help you with your research
can conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, then you absolutely do -
not- use them for interviews. Use them for something else. Transcribing,
analysis, write-up... but if you think at all they won't behave properly,
just do not use them. This shouldn't even be an issue, yet you have
chosen to make it one.

After having looked at the course outline, it seems this is less of a
research project and more like simply part of a mid-term paper.
"Midterm paper (20 pages): Participate in a virtual community for a
significant amount of time (at least 10 hours) and observe it. Interview
at least 3 community members. Analyze how the commmunity is designed and
in what ways it is successful. (25%)"
http://www.cc.gatech.edu/classes/AY2001/cs6470_fall/

I don't mind people asking on usenet for interviews and such, but the way
you have presented it leaves a lot to be desired.

I would do it but I have autism and an hour on the phone would set me back
for a month.

Maybe you should be more specific and say that you are interviewing
_American_ neopetters. Because I don't think that you want to call _me_ on
the phone, in Holland.
Some people maybe think that the USA is the whole world, but Neopets is a
very international community with members from the whole world.

Sorry, I just had to say that :).

Don't be sorry as I was thinking exactly the same thing - but then
that's merkins for you and my eBay experiences have shown that some
think that the UK is just another state, that dollar checks and cash can
be spent in our local shops without issue, and posted items should
arrive at no extra cost within 48 hours. 🙂)))

There's nothing wrong with interviewing via email/IM, but phone
interviews are a lot richer, because the two people talking can have
more of a dialog. When I hear the person speak there is an added
dimension to what they are saying, and I can ask them for elaboration
or clarification on things they say.

If you are interested in participating and prefer to talk with me via
email or IM, that's ok. I would still like to talk to you about your
experience on Neopets. Just let me know and I'll direct you to the
consent form.

Thanks,
Lee (lee at cc.gatech.edu)
