Youtube video not playing

Win 7 + firefox on laptop. Today youtube videos stopped displaying completely. Last few weeks the first one wouldn't show but the second and subsequent would (could then go back to the first OK). Sound plays fine. Can download (keepvid) and that's fine.
Tried: Flash updated, turned off adblock - which allowed ads to show but not play, all Win updates are in. Retired Comp Sci teacher but this has got me nobbled.

The Adobe site suggested turning off Protected mode - yah It worked. Went to make a comment and had to Login to Google to do so. You guessed it - now the video won't display AGAIN.

Do they work in other browsers? Chrome? IE? Opera?

I would also check Youtube settings and NOT use Flash if you can. If you really are using Flash for Youtube, Flash is being phased out, and Youtube can play videos as HTML5. Check your Youtube playback settings to see which method is being used. Switch from one to the other to see if it helps.

Flash has worked on other sites. Discovered it will play MOST of the time if I click to start the video really quickly. I don't use other browsers. Something weird about HTML5 which is playing sucessfully - sort of. No preview if you mouse along the botton. If I click back to previous spot on the video I get dual soundtracks - where it was plus where I am. If I go back to a previous video I continue to get the soundtrack - in fact it's still playing now even though I've been back to the Youtube start screen for minutes. However it does play them all consistently.
