Yup... Another 9590 thread.

Ok everyone, back in November I decided to do a "cheap" CPU and MOBO upgrade since ryzen was right around the corner and prices on older stuff was next to nothing, and I was still running on a M5A asus board with an FX6100 I figured "oh, I could spend a quick 200 bucks and update myself a bit"... HOLY MOTHER OF GOD I WAS WRONG!

welp... I got my sabertooth 990FX R3.0 and my FX9590... I already had components I was happy with, PSU calculator had told me I was good with my little 750 to run the gas guzzling 9590 and I already had an H80i water cooler, and plenty of fans (all be it a little cramped in a mid size case)

I thought I was ready.... dear god what a bloody naive thought that was... first I wasn't even able to get the box to post... ok... much googling later... I figured out the board NAMED AFTER MY CPU required a bios update just to function with ANY FX series processor... meaning I was SOL as my old CPU was an FX as well, right, so I barrow an old CPU from a friend, get it updated, get everything installed.... fantastic right?

WRONG! I ran the box for about 3 or 4 days without issue, granted I was waiting on a paycheck to run out and update my video card so I wasn't gaming or doing anything taxing.

In comes my stand in card a nice little 970, while I wait for the 1080ti to release, I start actually using the computer, at first it was just while watching 4k video, but eventually it started locking up anytime I tried pushing the system beyond standby, (I later noticed for some reason my CPU speed jumps to max output at the flick of a mouse... oh joy...) so I started by checking temps since last time I had a similar issue it was the CPU overheating way back when I was still air cooling the FX6100.

So i check my temps... all seems ok, I'm maxing out at 61c and the heat threshold on the 6100 was 97c, and i foolishly figured all FX series CPUs would fall in line with that. not to mention from everything I read online the 9590 was supposed to run hotter then the 6100 anyway. so I moved on to trouble shooting other areas, checking all my connections and testing RAM, hard drives and my PSU.

after brainstorming with a few friends and a tech or two at fry's we came to the conclusion that under "turbo" the CPU was drawing more power then my PSU could provide in a stable manner. soooo I wen't overkill and picked up a gold rated 1000watt corsair.

So I went to a lan party, and we played in my buddys living room which arguably had much better air flow then my own, we played all day and not a pep out of it, thought I had fixed it.

I go home, it starts throwing a fit again. ok.. more research... WHAT!?!?!?! the heat threshold on the 9590 is only 57c? THE MOTHERTRUCKING HELL IS THIS!?!?!?!.... ok.... reluctantly I keep looking for a fix, although a small part of me is saying to sell this 9590 and go buy an 8370 lol.

So I spend $350 more on a new case, fans and a big mothertrucker 360mm radiator with 3 fans on it. ok... it still pushes the temps a little closer to that threshold then I would rather be under... so... I go in and turn off the "Turbo" which limits it to 4.7ghz and that seems to keep it stable, but it still gets just barely hot enough to lock up occasionally.. and aside form doing a very expensive cooling mod that involves refrigerating my cooling system I'm out of ideas.. I'm probably just going to save my pennies at this point and scarp this setup and jump to ryzen..

but before that, does anyone have any ideas? lol

I will say, this has been bar none. the WORST experience I have ever had with a computer, lmfao!

The FX9590 is a horrible chip - I wouldn't even use it (any more than to simply 'experience' the gong show) if it were given to me for free...... let alone buying it because it was "cheap".

Anyway, just to comment;
The 9590 is barely stable at stock, even if you do get the recommended cooler (H100i minimum) and PSU (used to be 1000W, now it's 850W).

While the chip itself can get too hot for stable, the biggest issue (and whiy only certain boards can adequately power it) is the VRMs. Shy of getting a dedicated fan to blow over your VRMs to ensure they stay cool enough...... there's not a lot you can do here.

You've replaced almost everything, and learned exactly why it a horrible chip/money pit, regardless of how little you pay...

I'd cut your losses at this point - sell the 9590 (and board IMO) and pick up something else.

If nothing else, your PSU and CPU cooler should last you a long time..... and should allow you to OC whatever your new setup might be........ and, BONUS! It'll likely outperform the 9590, even if it were stable!

Welcome to the 9590 experience. Almost non of them are stable at stock and they are one of the worst cpu's ever made. I got one for free and had a compatible motherboard from my fx 8320. I had a older costum 240mm rad loop that was running my 8320 at 5ghz but the 9590 couldn't even go to 4.6ghz before getting unstable. I just sold it as a wonky cpu for 60 euro as nobody wanted to give me more for it. I recommend you just sell the 9590 and just jump to a new ryzen or i5 build as the 9590 is already getting outperformed by the cheapest ryzen or lowest end core i5 from nowadays.

There are a lot of users who had or has a lot of issues with the 9590, most of them are people who can't get them stable on a relatively good motherboard.

If you could return it for an FX 8320 or 8350 and overclocking, I got my FX 8320 to 5ghz but it wasn't easy. Or I would downclock it some and see where you can get it stable at is your best bet and just see if you could get it stable at its stock 4.7ghz with a turbo of 5ghz, You might be able to get away with disabling the turbo and see if its stable.

As for heat, well its a 220watt TDP chip, and they do become unstable around 60C and with AMD's low temp ceiling you'd be lucky to be able to keep it below that on an H80.
