Z170 chipset and B250 chipset

So i just bought a CPU second hand for a very good price, and im quite new to the intel cpu's and i would want to know if the cpu with z170 chipset will work with a mobo i have laying around with b250 chipset?

what CPU did you get ? the exact model.

z170 or z270 MB will allow you to overclock the CPU and run memory at higher than 2133Mhz speed (both auto and manual).
otherwise B250 will do about the same job.

Thanks for the quick answers, so basically if i want to run 2400Mhz ram i need to overclock it? Or have i got this wrong?

2400 will run fine on B250 MB (2133 was the limit for the B150 series).

It should work. However, you have an unlocked CPU (which means it's able to be overclocked), so the preferred motherboard will be the Z170 (since it will allow you to overclock); you can't overclock with the B250.
