I am getting ready to upgrade my cpu and motherboard. I am going to be upgrading to an i5 7600k. As I was looking for motherboards around my price range i notice the Z270-K and the Z270-P. the P is 30 dollars less on amazon but it has the same specs as the Z270-K. I was wondering what is the actual difference between the two?

Solution

Only differences between the Z270-K and Z270-P motherboards are these:

PCIe3.0 x1 and PCI slots (Quantity):
K has 2x PCIe3.0 x1 slots and 2x PCI slots
P has 4x PCIe3.0 x1 slots

SATA Storage Connectors (Quantity):
K have 6x SATAIII ports
P have 4x SATAIII ports

SATA Ports Orientation in Motherboard...
Z170-K : at a glance, both the K and P look almost identical. Except with the implementation of ASMedia controller, it frees up some bandwidth for the maximum support of 3 displays from the iGPU, SATA Express port and you also get USB 3.1 Type A plus Type C on the side.

SATA Ports Orientation in Motherboard (for better cable routing):
K has 2 out of 6 SATA ports oriented 90-deg.
P does not have any of its SATA ports oriented 90-deg. (all are vertical)

LAN Controller:
K uses Intel I219V LAN Controller
P uses Realtek RTL8111H LAN Controller

Rear Panel USB Ports (Quantity and Types):
K: 7x Total = 2x USB2.0 + 2x USB3.0 (Type-A) + 1x USB3.0 (Type-C) + 2x USB3.1 (Type-A) + 0x USB3.1 (Type-C)
P: 6x Total = 2x USB2.0 + 4x USB3.0 (Type-A) + 0x USB3.0 (Type-C) + 0x USB3.1 (Type-A) + 0x USB3.1 (Type-C)

Fan/Pump Headers (Total):
K has 4x
P has 3x

It's up to you which ports/connections/features you need.
