I currently have a z270, i5 7600k, rtx 2060 6gb, 8 gb ram would I need to upgrade to a z370 to use a i9 9900k, my cpu is currently bottle necking with my gpu and obviously need to upgrade my cpu but not sure if I require a z370 to get the most out the i9 9900k ?

Z390 has native support for 9th gen Intel. Z370 boards may require a BIOS update first (unless the board in question has BIOS flashback, this process would require an 8th gen Intel CPU). Welcome to the world of "backward" compatibility. Same issue with AMD chips & boards. Both companies have ever-decreasing interest in releasing anything except enthusiast tier chipsets (Z-series for Intel, X-series for AMD) for each successive generation.

the Z270 board while has the same socket as the Z370 and Z390 the 9900k will not work on it so yes you would have to upgrade to the newer 300 series board to use a 9900k.

Like Tennis2 said a Z370 board will have to have a bios update in order to run a 9900k on it, and some of those boards will need a gen 8 cpu installed in order to update the bios.

If you going straight to the 9900k i would just get a Z390 as they are made for the higher power draw of the i9 cpu.
