[SOLVED] Z370 ASrock Killer SLI/ac for i9-9900k

Hi there,

What's every one's thoughts about pairing the z370 asrock killer sli/ac mobo with the new i9-9900k? I know it's not ideal with it being a lower end board but would it be worth pairing the 9900k with an ASrock high end board z390 over my current z370? I currently have the z370 killer sli/ac paired with an i7-8086k and it can run it at 5.2 ghz with no thermal throttling issues. I do realize that's probably more of the luck of the chip than the quality of the board. I'm hoping I can get a modest OC on the new chip (whenever it gets delivered) maybe around 4.9 to 5.0 ghz since it seems to run hot. If all chips were created equal, what type of gains would I see with a highend z390 vs what I have right now? If Im debating over something around a .1 ghz increase in an OC I'd rather just keep what I have.

Settled at 5.2ghz (all core) at 1.36v and I couldn't be happier. Below is a small list of gaming thermals throughout 30 minutes of play and I used EVGA Flow Control as well as CPUID HWMonitor;

World of Warcraft - 44°C - 52°C
PUBG - 44°C - 52°C
Overwatch - 44°C - 52°C
Monster Hunter World- 48°C - 54°C
Rocket League - 44°C - 64°C (jumps up when searching for matches but during game play it stays in upper 40's)
GTA5 - 48°C - 56°C (There are jumps to 62°C but is infrequent, 4-5 times in 30 minutes of game play for about 2-3 seconds each)

It's a small sample size but it's enough to make me feel perfectly fine about pairing the 9900k with the entry/midrange z370 Asrock Killer SLI/ac motherboard. I'm glad I got to see it for myself and that...

True, I would suspect that the 8086k would give slightly better performance with the higher clock. Only reason I ordered the 9900k is because prior to the 8086k, I had a build with a 2500k from 2011 that gave me almost 9 years of pure enjoyment. I'm banking on games utilizing 8 cores/16 threads in the not-so-distant future so that I won't have to upgrade for quite awhile. I really hope that the 9900k can provide as much longevity as the 2500k did for me.

Yes, I've also read that the vrm's have been beefed up with the z390's but I've been on the fence whether it'd be worth it for me to upgrade from my z370. As hot as the 9900k's are running, I still feel like more will come down to the chip that I receive rather than the slight improvements in changing my motherboard. Thank you much for the input!
 
Hi as1985, it would be great if you could provide an update on this thread when you do get your 9900K in terms of how well the Z370 ASrock Killer SLI stands up both in stock use and if you can achieve a decent overclock...I have the Gigabyte Z370 Gaming 7 and was thinking of going the same route if the Z370 can handle the 9900K..

I'll definitely update once the 9900k is in my pc. I actually had two 9900ks in hand this weekend but sold them to make some profit. Another $90 and that money almost paid for my pre-order entirely. Actually should make money, about $270, after paying my pre-order off and selling my current 8086k.

I wish there was more information regarding the 9900k and how it runs on z370's but it's still so new and hard to find i guess.
 


Wow well done on that smart thinking, especially as it drops the price of your own setup...Looking forward to hear how the 9900K fairs on the Z370..

Just received a notification from B&H Photo that they should be shipping my 9900k pre-order from way back in early October. I will post an update once I receive it and it's in my PC. Didn't want you to think that I forgot about this thread.

I'm quite interested to see how everything pans out given the wide range of information out there right now regarding VRM's and thermals. Managed to 3D print a fan bracket for my Thermaltake Core P3 case that should cool my mobo VRM's nicely so hopefully that helps with the beast that is the 9900k. Even if I can't push the new chip quite as hard as the 8086k, my hope is that I won't need to upgrade for many years (7+ is the plan) and that eventually the additional cores/threads outweigh the slightly lower clock speed.

Update:

Switched out the chips as of earlier this afternoon and used Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Thermal Grease Paste and so far I'm very impressed with the 9900k and how well the Z-370 killer sli/ac mobo handles it. I've got it overclocked to 5.1 ghz (all core) right now @1.34v and according to my EVGA CLC 280, the 9900k runs idle at about 28° and when gaming it climbs to between 44° and 52°. I haven't done any crazy stress testing yet since I'm still playing with it but so far so good. For the gaming, I had PUBG running on my main monitor along with World of Warcraft on my secondary monitor at the same time and the temps didn't fluctuate at all, they stayed within that 44°-52° range. I know these aren't standard benchmarks or anything and maybe I was expecting the worst given the temp reports and mobo VRM issues for the past month or so but it feels like it runs cooler than my 8086k. I'll post more as I do more with the setup.

I'm glad I got to see it for myself and that I didn't have to splurge for a z390 when it appears that a z370 is more than capable when paired with this chip. I'm not quite sure if more has to do with the chip or the motherboard but either way, it runs cooler than my 8086k ever did when it was overclocked to 5.2 as that usually ran games in the mid to upper 60's C.

If/when you get your 9900k vMax, please post your findings as well. It can't hurt having more information out there with how the 9900k interacts with various z370 boards.
