I've RMA'd 2 other motherboards before i bought this one I decided to try a new cpu while I was at it. The past two motherboards were MSI's which I could not get to post either. When I turn the system on, I get no post, and no sound from motherboard speaker which I hooked up. All i get is the red/amber light on the post state led. I feel like I'm going crazy trying to fix this thing. Have been messing around with PC's for a long time and have never had something this vexing!

I have done literally everything other than try a different CPU (which is brand new) and unfortunately the mobo i bought is not compatible (I don't think) with my old i5 6500. I tried switching with a known good power supply, and tried a known good heat sink. I tried bread boarding the system with only 1 stick of ram and the cpu fan as the only things hooked up. I've reseated the CPU a couple of times and checked the socket for bent pins. I've tried every suggestion I could find here and on the forums at Toms Hardware and on the ASUS forums.

I feel like pulling my hair out! Thanks for reading, and for any suggestions you can offer!

Solution
Well from what I've gathered you're trying to use a 6500 with a z370. They are not compatible-a 6500 would require a mobo such as z270 (or similar gen) and the z370 boards work only with the 8xxx series intel cpus

Estimable
What are the specs of the system that is not working and the names of the parts you've tried already (the motherboard names). The more detail the better.

So the i5 6500 is new and it has failed to work in two different MSI motherboards and now a third?
