Generally no, it's not going to post.

Some boards have a BIOS flash function without a working/compatible CPU, but those are fairly rare - and limited to top tier boards.

Unless you already have a Z370 board, the slight premium for Z390 would be easier than trying to update the BIOS on an older board.

I think you'd need a z370 compatible cpu to boot the p.c. to be able to flash it. Flashing is just upgrading the bios version from a utility or usb drive. I also do remember seeing a thread around here recently where someone tried a 9600k in a z370 and it didn't work (they didn't have a compatible cpu to update the bios either).

If you can return it I'd just do that and get a z390.

That's skylake. I don't think that'll be compatible. You need an early coffee lake cpu (8086k, 8700k, 8600k, 8500, 8400).

Can research your mobo to see if you can flash the bios without a compatible cpu but at the end of the day I think you may need to return one of the items. Can either get a z390 mobo or get a 8600k/8700k.

I know this thread is really old, but for some reason, it's still the top result when searching "z370 and 9600k" on Google even though this thread is completely obselete....
When this thread was made most z370 boards were being shipped with a BIOS that weren't compatible with 9th gen CPUs.
However, z370 boards are now being shipped with newer BIOSes that support most 9th gen CPUs
If you're in doubt about compatibility, check your manufactures website!

Later manufactured dates might have an updated BIO, but there's no way to know for sure unless it's specifically mentioned on the retailer side if things. Manufacturers only list supported as of X BIOS revision, offering no guarantees beyond that. They have both way of knowing if your board was recently manufactured, or has sat on a retailer shelf/warehouse for 6+ months.
