z68 + i7-2600k.... can this combo run a game 2018 with overclocking?

Hi guys

I have an AsRock z68 extreme 4 gen 3 mobo (2012 or something?) paired with an I7-2600k.....

If I buy a $100 cpu cooler, overclock that chip to 4. something hopefully good GHz, get two sticks of ram that will go to the boards overclocked allowed 2100MHz, add an ssd, and lastly( I know right)... buy a 2018 mid range gpu....

My question is, will that even work trying to play a 2018 gaming title in 4k?....

If it runs, would that overclocked machine come close in performance to a say a modern $800-$1000 I3-8350k build?

Would appreciate some help from anyone who knows o/c'ing performance in the real world on the ancient platform....

4Ghz is reachable for that CPU even with the stock cooler if the ambient temp and case air flow is good. And even a 2500K can handle nowadays games without big bottlenecking powerful GPUs like the Nvidia GTX 1070. So you don't need to go to a cooler that expensive and the 2600K is perfectly fine to play this years games.

Using all threads the 2700k ties the 8350k at stock frequences, and even beats it OCed.

It is game dependent.
We can not say for sure, if your proc can run the games quite smooth or will it be a bottleneck.
Gaming on 4k puts more strain on the GPU and not on CPU.
your 2600k can still run games on 4k.
It is better to name the titles you want to play and your goal fps.

Playing in 4k is much more dependant on the GPU, and frankly only 1080Ti provides somewhat acceptable experience, unless you severely lower level of details. This is a quite expensive card, and will also very soon be replaced by a newer (and apparently faster) model.

i7 2600k is certainly no slouch even today when overclocked. It can game very good, but when you have to invest so much in the fastest possible GPU (you mentioned 4k), it seems to me a kind of a waste to use it with older rig like this.

As you can see, as long as game uses up to 4 cores, i3 is between 30 and 40% faster. If it uses all available threads (8), then 2600k is basically on equal grounds in terms of performance. It depends on the game, though. Some of them won't use more than 1 or 2 cores, some will use 4, some will use all you have. So it is a mixed bag.

I wanted to build a new system the moment the I7-8700k came out, but I want to hold off now because I hear they're shrinking the architecture soon, which means less power draw, cooler chips, more o/c room.... I'm not rich, so I want my next pc to last as well as this one.....

I'm still running a 2600k + gtx970 system and it does quite well for it age. It's oc'd to 4.4ghz and can handle games mordern games quite well. Then again as long as it stays above 60fps I'm satisfied since my screen is only 60hz.

Since you want 4k I would just get a new gpu when nvidia's new ones come out and later upgrade the rest.

You can see there the FPS by resolution and GPU at 1080p/1440p/4k and CPU performance at 1080p.

Using i7-2600k rx 580 - 1080p games run fantastic.
Can't get higher than 1080p on this monitor.
4k is a struggle unless you own a 1080ti or better (1180)

Thanks, that's a good point... I won't lie though, the 1080ti seems a scary purchase atm.... It seems like GPU manufacturers have been hinting for a while now they're actually going to release some new gaming gpu's that are a big step forward... instead of concentrating on mass producing mining equipment like they have been.....

Yeah, that seems like the smart thing to do with the prices of gpu's stabilizing a bit... hopefully the prices wont be too stupid ....and the promised bump in performance with the next gen...

I run a 2600k oc'd to 4.4ghz with a GTX 1080 and 16GB of paired DDR3 RAM. This game is the first game I haven't been able to max out the graphics at. I still seem to be getting higher FPS than some others with latest gen CPU though.

I get about 50 to 70fps at 1440p with mostly high settings. Averages at about 65fps.

My rig gets me 100 to 144fps on wolf 2 with ultra settings everything. Even PUBG averages at just over 100FPS. Hitman gets about 90fps.

CPU still good, just get a good cpu cooler. My cpu is now cooler at full utilisation with the Coolermaster hyper 212x than it was without overclocking idle.
