z87 mobo with z97 processor

The i7-4790K is a Haswell Refresh Processor. This motherboard was initially released as a Haswell Processors compatible one. Later on when the Haswell Refresh Processors were released, they too were made compatible through BIOS Updates with this motherboard.

So this means, the motherboard is very well capable of running the i7-4790K Processor if you've the latest BIOS. Here are the details of the latest BIOS update available for this motherboard:

Version 1603 {I would advise you to get this update over 1504, as this not only allows to install the i7-4790K but also has optimizations that will allow this motherboard to overclock this processor better.]
Description MAXIMUS VI HERO BIOS 1603
1.Fixed 4T HDD not detect in IDE mode.
2.Optimize overclocking function
File Size 5.31 MBytesupdate 2014/09/19
You can download this BIOS Update here

Ok, here are the options available for you now:

If you already own this motherboard with an Haswell running and now planning to upgrade to i7-4790K, then:

- Upgrade to the latest BIOS mentioned above.
- Then, replace your current Haswell Processor with this i7-4790K Haswell Refresh.

If you're just going to buy this motherboard with the i7-4790K and you don't have any old Haswell processor sitting around at your home:

- Request the person selling to flash the motherboard to the latest BIOS mention above and then ship it to you.
(OR)
- If your friend have a Haswell processor, borrow it, put in on this motherboard, update to the latest BIOS mentioned above, replace the Haswell with this i7-4790K Haswell Refresh and you will be good to go.

Note:
The latest BIOS Update 1603 was release way back in 2014/09/19. So if you buy this board now, there is a possibility of you receiving a new shipment of ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO that comes with either 1504 or 1603 BIOS pre-installed.

If this is the case, then you don't have to do any of the methods I've mention above. Just buy, install the processor on the motherboard and you will be good to go. So you better talk to your seller and find out about this.

Cheers!

I purchased it on 12/1/14 from Newegg so it sounds like I should be in good shape for the 1603 BIOS and excellent shape for the 1504 BIOS. Thank you very much for your help.
