Which processor should I choose for 1080p as I will do doing everything at that resolution. Will be doing schoolwork, coding assignments, 1080p gaming and 1080p gameplay video editing. Is the i7 4790K enough for this?
What so you think, as I already am planning to get an Asus Z97-WS for my 4790k

Solution
The 4790k should be enough for you unless you're doing some serious high end video editing and 3d modeling when time is crucial. But if you really do feel the need for the 5820k it won't hurt anything other than your pocketbook.

I think there's no reason to go with the 5820k at all. x99 is going to be a lot more expensive than current z97 for a while (ram+motherboard costs) and you could as well go with the 6 core 5930k or the 8 core 5960x if you have that much money to spend.

Ok 4790K then. Not doing 3D rendering or heavy graphics coding
5930K sucks because it is a 5820K with an overclock, there is no point in spending £300+ on a CPU and not overclocking it

You're not just paying for an overclock the 5930K supports the same PCIe configuration as the 5960K (2x16+1x8). I don't know what the real world performance of gpus at 2x16+1x8 would be over the 5820K's 1X16+1x8+1x8. Of course to take advantage of this you would have to have atleast 2 gpus.

Hi LookItsRain,
I have the exact same confusion of going with i5 4690k or i7 4790k. I read a post which says i5 4690 gives equally good FPS as of i7 4790 due to games not using Hyper threading. Is that true? I want to keep my setup future proof for atleast next 3 years and hence, i5\i7 confusion.

I am looking purely at a gaming setup with single card (GTX 970) and single screen but would like to play games with everything maxed out in Far cry 4, Call of duty advanced warfare, Assassins creed Unity and Shadow of mordor.

Thanks for the response.

But still considering I will not upgrade for next 2-3 years, what do you suggest I should go with - i5 4690k or i7 4790k. Also, please suggest a good mobo for single card (preferably asus) and RAM (8 or 16)

The Single Core performance of the i5 and i7 is almost equal, as said before. At least for games you're not getting any benefits from the i7 yet. But if you plan to use your rig for 3 or more years we should consider the upcoming benefits of DX12, which is planned spread workload over the cores way better. Until DX12 drops, the i7 will do a good job anyway.

So in conclusion, if possible, get the i7 and a RAM bundle of 2x4 GB.

Replying to the same thread as there is some info on DX12 now, What do you guys think now? Does DX12 change the equation or not? Is it still good idea to go with i5 4690K over i7 4790K from only gaming perspective? Would appreciate any info on this topic...

I think when DX12 drop, I will pull out my Athlon Thunderbird and play some GTA 5, cause you know, GPU dependent
