Hey guys,
Earlier today I made a boo-boo 🙁 . I am preparing to build my second computer, and I purchased a MSI Gaming 5 Z97 Motheboard today. I love the board, and it is compatible with my planned CPU, the 4790k. However, it wasn't until after also purchasing a 2x4 GB Crucial Ballistix Sport kit of DDR4 2400 RAM that I found out it did not support the 288-pin DIMM form factor. Upon further research, I found NO Z97 mobos that supported DDR4. Normally, I would bite the bullet and go pick up a new DDR3 RAM kit, but I would much prefer to have the more modern technology and features, as I imagine DDR3 will soon go the way of the dodo. So, my other option is to go with a X99 build, which I DID find DDR4-supporting-motherboards for, but that adds a couple hundred to the build cost. Are these my only options? or am I looking in the wrong place for a DDR4 Z97 Mobo?

Thanks,

Thrill.

Or, just send the board back and hold out for a Z170 board (which supports DDR4). Should only be a few weeks until they're on the shelves. You get a better overall system building on gen 6 instead of gen 4.

Normally, I would agree, but I would like this machine to last a long time, and DDR4 support would be very benificial to its future proofing. Is there any expectation to see DDR4 support for the Z97s in the future? If so, I'll pick up some DDR3 and just upgrade in a year or so. If not, I may have to go with the X99. The build price is already lower then expected do to Microcenters deals, thankfully, so I should be able to squeeze it into the budget. Hopefully.

^This mostly....though it really depends on what you're doing with the machine....DDR2 remained viable for YEARS after DDR3 hit the market. If other features, such as the better M.2, and USB 3.1 support matter to you go for it (Z170).

A stupid question- you are referring to Intel's 6th Gen processors, the ones just recently announced?
TBH, I was unaware of them prior to your comment. This interests me greatly, however, I have seen no reviews on either the i5-6600K OR the i7-6700K. Are they well regarded? Are they capable gaming CPUs?

Anandtech has a good review....ignore the CPU stuff as far as performance gains.

Well, no wonder I hadn't seen reviews. I was on vacation for 2 weeks and only returned yesterday. This is quite the surpise, but a pleasant one. I will hold out for the 6700k and probably snag a MSI Z170 once they are released. Thanks for the help everyone! 😀

NP, enjoy that new system smell 😉
