What sort of overclock wilI get out of this? Is at least 4.2 Ghz possible?

And will the Z97P D3 be better than the Gigabyte Z87 DS3h and Z87 G43? (obviously with those 2 mobo's i'd be using the 4670K)

Does the Z97P D3 come with SATA cables too?

I would guess that 4.2 GHz is well within reason for this combo. Maximum will depend on your luck in the Silicon Lottery.

If I were buying today, I'd get a Z97 board, not Z87.

Most mobos come with at least 2 SATA cables. Check the manufacturer's website to see if they have a list like "What's in the box" and it should tell you exactly.

Some i5's can OC to 4.5GHz stable, some go all out at 4.3GHz. 4.2GHz is pretty much a normal OC for that CPU. I'd say, as Yogi said, if you get a good enough CPU, then 4.4-4.5GHz with that cooler should be pretty stable too.

Right now Z97>Z87 as they're new and more upgradable (Not sure how many will really upgrade lol). Get a Z87 only if it packs some really better features than its Z97 counterparts (not applicable in your case).

They do come with cables.

I had no trouble getting 4.2 ghz in turbo boost with 4690k + 212. With XTU, simply raise the turbo boost multiplier up to 42x. This kept the base multiplier at 35x and base clock 100 mhz, but gave a steady 4.2 ghz boost (and +10% in benchmarks) at about 65C.

When I changed the base multiplier (in bios) up to 37x, it went up to 80C at the same cpu benchmark levels. This chip is fine at 80C but the fan is way too loud for my taste, which is probably the downside of this combo.

Then I changed the base clock to 105 mhz, kept the base multiplier at 35x (~3.7 ghz), and the boost at 40x (~4.2 ghz). Same 65C and same +10% benchmark.

I disabled "turbo boost short power max" (which limits the duration of the turbo boost) and didn't change the vcore for this (but the wattage is already higher for the turbo boost, so that's convenient). Going past 4.2 ghz quickly became unstable; at a 43x turbo boost with otherwise stock settings it was okay but 44x was unstable. With 105mhz base, a 41x multplier (4.3+ ghz) was unstable. I think there's room to up the voltage and get a few hundred more megahertz while keeping the fan noise at a reasonable level.
