I have bought a Zalman CNPS9500 for my 2.53ghz CPU to help me overclock, but i'm not sure if i fitted it right. I have installed as read from the instructions and i have tightened it to as far as possible on the rails. However i still have slackness in the fan and it can be still move. Is this normal and that is how its fitted or does it need to be tighter ??

It does not move on its own, but if i touch it i can slide it around. Its on a socket 478 base.

Any help will be much appreciated.

I think this is normal.

I have the same hsf, and have some rotational movement on mine also. As long as it is firmly attached, there should be no problem.

Basically, the retaining clip acts like a spring, preventing excessive pressure on the cpu.

I noticed some 'dimples' (don't know the technical term) on the retaining clip, that could be used to help location, but not on the heatsink itself. If they modified the design a bit, and put these 'dimples' on the heatsink also, it would help it to locate better and prevent rotational movement.

They actualy recomend you turn it a bit to get good contact once it's tightened to make sure you have the best contact with the heat sink and CPU

I have one on a socket 939 AMD/Asus mobo and it does not move at all.

I don't know, always though that a HS should be a snug fit with no movement at all. Come to think of it, I've never has any heat sink "slide around" after installing it. Let me clarify, all heatsinks will have some lateral movement if you grab a hold an twist hard enough, but don't think they should not move just with a gentle hand

I've got a Zalmans mounted on my Skt 478 P4 as well as my dual opties, and all 3 installs are tight with no movement at all. Are you sure the screws are tight? Did you include the rubber washers? Did you use the proper size standoffs? The blue brackets compared to the silver brackets?

Not calling anyone out on this, but it does not seem "normal" to me...

I did not use the rubber washers on my (just installed it this week).

I used the silver bracket (amd 939 socket) with some AS5 and it seems to be working fine.
