Hi All,

Does any one know what to do about tribbles in ZapM when they multiply
like crazy? How do you get rid of them? They are blocking the way
down.

TIA,
Jo.

I've never heard about ZapM but 'tribbles' sounds familar to me. They
appeared in ELITE (one of the first computer 3-D space trading games, if
not *the* first at all). After you bought such _a_ cute little thingy,
_they_ were spreading all around your cockpit after a while! The
solution was to fly to a nearby sun until the temperature in your
cockpit came close to critical. So, if the tribbles in ZapM are actually
a reference to that ones in ELITE, I would search for some source of
fire (or heat at least), e.g. things like stepping into a field of lava,
hot water or whatever is available in ZapM, is hot and usually hurts you
(without killing you, of course).

Acornsoft Elite for the BBC Micro was the first - November 1984 - but only
subsequent Elites for other platforms had tribbles.

My first computer was a Commodore C64 and ELITE the first computer game
I played on a home computer. I'm just curious: did the BBC-version
already had 'quests' at all (IIRC there were 4 or 5 quests in the
C64-version)?

BBC tape Elite has none; disc Elite has two - one to kill the Constrictor,
one to evade Thargoids while carrying some secret data.

Unfortunately, the tribbles multiply so quickly there's not much you
can do when they get out of control :-( I'll fix this in the next
version. In the meantime, I recommend killing them before they get a
chance to breed. Also, they won't multiply unless they are close by
or have LOS to the Hero.

These adorable little creatures became famous after featuring in the
"Trouble with Tribbles" episode of Star Trek (the old generation).

Anyway, if you want to check out ZapM, it's a somewhat silly sci-fi
roguelike I'm writing. You can find out more at http://zapm.org
