So i have crappy I5 Cpu in my laptop and I want to change it I7 4800QM is that possible? And don't bother to say that is not worth it, don't try to game on that and stuff of that sort, I have a killer gaming PC at home but I want to upgrade my old laptop so it can run some lite games on the go. And i can do bios mods if it is required.

Hey there,

As much as you don't want to hear the answer, the truth is, that it's not worth it, and nor can it be done. Most laptops of that level have a soldered CPU. It can't be changed. You only find this in expensive laptops.

Lets even say you could do it, and say you have an I5 4210m, and you could upgrade the CPU, both the 'crappy' I5 and the I7 4800m, have the exact same GPU architecture. If you believe switching the CPU would give more FPS, well you'd be very disappointed. Sure the 4800m GPU runs at 200mhz more, but with only the same number of cores, there will be no uplift for the GPU portion.

With all of that said, I used to have an Asus with a 3610dm and the HD4600 iGPU and often use to load up Battlefield 3 on low to medium settings. It works great.

You do understand that HP Zbook 15 G2 has socketed CPU right? And GPU is already upgraded because it's on MXM slot so GPU is not the cause

Ha! I was wondering, as I couldn't find anything on it. If it's socketed, then you should be able to use the current latest bios and upgrade. However, as pointed out, in terms of gaming, there will be barely any noticeable changes due to the limitations of the iGPU.
So I can change it no problem? Nice because I was wondering if there was any bios lock for the cpu swap, and don't worry about the iGPU, the zbook 15 g2 has quadro card too that is upgradable

As long as it's the most up to date bios, then I would say yes. It would be ridiculous to think they'd support your base processor, but not the top end in that family. Which CPU does yours have exactly?

Edit: Also, although the socket should be fine and take the CPU, the cooling on the older CPU may not cool the newer one sufficiently. You might be able to get an appropriate fan/pipe replacement that better suits.
