The ribbon on Excel and Word, and the menus resulting from right clicking anywhere, have suddenly become very large - how can I shrink them back to normal?

Thank you where do I find "Customise the Ribbon" window? The only entry I have to Office is via Excel and/or Word, neither of which seem to allow such customisation. "Help" says I can't change font size - though I am not sure that is the problem. Also, how would changing Office help with the right click pop down screens which are also huge!

Open excel
right click on the blank area at bottom of ribbon, near where it says Clipboard, Font, alignment, etc.,
Customise the ribbon is a choice in the menu that opens
in the next big window that opens, at bottom right there is a heading called Customisation with a drop down button saying reset.
Click the arrow in that button and Reset all customization is the bottom choice
click ok

this fix would also work in word - you will need to do in both if you have them.

Office is the suite of office applications that excel and Word generally come with.

I don't know if that will help with that other problem you mentioned - the big menus.

Hi, Thanks again, but still suffering. I have Office Home and Student 2007 - I don't know whether that makes a difference. There is very little blank space (though just visible) below the Clipboard etc line. I have right clicked at every possible bit of it (including the area to the right of the ribbon which is part of the same blank but larger) but no reaction at all. Have tried on Excel and Word.

oh, yeah, thats for 2010 and on.. if you had asked me a year ago I had excel 2007.

one bit of advice i found was to run office setup and do a repair,

this might work
Are you sure about the Jan?

I just ran this command
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 2007\excel.exe" /regserver

and it appears to have worked (Word too).

Or do you mean the /r switch. I see that is assigned to "readonly" in excel

that might reset everything to defaults.

I don't seem to have any Office set up files - or indeed any Office programs other than Excel and Word themselves. This is all getting a bit complicated and I would rather live with the problem than risk losing anything important.

I am suspicious that, because the pop down right click menus have also grown enormously, it is not an Office problem at all, another reason for not interfering!

But many thanks for your help anyway

In Excel 2007 look in the upper left corner of the window. To the right of the circular icon click on the black down pointing arrow and a menu shows up. At the bottom of the menu there's the entry that says "Minimize the Ribbon". That's what you want to click on. Remember in future posts to say what version you have; that saves a lot of wasted time.

Good luck.

Thank you for your thoughts. I had tried that one. Unfortunately "Minimise the Ribbon" simply makes the ribbon disappear - except the top line which stays in the same large font. I shall certainly state the version in future. I still suspect that this problem has more to do with Microsoft in general rather than just Office, simply because it applies elsewhere. I am using Windows 10.

I'm afraid I got a bit lost there - my computer doesn't seem to have the same things as yours - all I was allowed to do was change the resolution. HOWEVER, I accepted the usual invitation to download updates to Windows 10 - turns out it was a mega upgrade and the problem has gone away. I haven't found out what new problems it has introduced but at least this saga is over. Many thanks for your help!!
