So I'm currently planning on building a mostly budget PC as my current one is seriously outdated (hd 5830, amd phenom x4 965, 8gb ddr2 ram... 😀), grabbing an i5 6600 and 8gb of ddr4 ram.

My original pick for this build was the RX470, as here in Hungary, it currently appears to be the best price/performance choice (~$222, while the rx480 is nearly around $300 and the GTX1060 6gb is around $310-20, and the r9 380x/gtx 960 are also about $220, which makes absolutely zero sense but whatever).

However, just today, I stumbled upon the Zotac GTX1060 3gb for $240, which is weird because even the 3gb versions of the 1060 are usually no less than $260 here.
I instantly started looking up benchmarks and comparisons, but the only conclusion I was able to come to, is that the 1060 3gb slightly outperforms the 470 in most dx11 titles, however the 470 seems to gain the upperhand in newer dx12 titles and higher resolutions (but I play at 1080p so that is irrelevant).

I just can't choose. The 470 appears to be more future proof, but the 1060 seems to have more raw power.

TL;DR dunno what to choose between zotac 1060 3gb ($240) and sapphire rx 470 4gb ($222)

What do you guys think?

Solution
1060 is more powerful, but the 3GB VRam and not so good performance in DX12 (its fine but compared to 470/480...)

To be honest, I myself am stuck between these two, thinking. Let me know in PM what you will pick.

Well, the thing is, as I see it right now, the 470 is able to run everything pretty well that the 1060 can, obviously with less performance but still with playable & decent fps, and it also appears to be more futureproof, and is also cheaper. So my choice would be sealed right now but there is one thing that is worrying me.

Most of the comparisons I've seen with the 470vs1060 3gb were made using the MSI, devil, nitro, etc. versions of the 470. The one I'm looking to get is the most basic one, just called "Sapphire RX 470". The base/turbo clock is 932/1216... while the 1060's is 1500/1700 or something similiar. Now I'm not much of a techie but... does the fact that I wouldn't getting be the nitro or devil versions of the card give me noticeablely lower performance?:s

So you can't get your hands on the ones I mentioned? Okay, well I don't really know about this one, check YouTube, Google this model, check reviews on Newegg and Amazon. It should be good, I only dislike the reference models, their cooling solution is horrible. Go for it if you are really going for AMD instead of NVidia, 3GB won't be enough in future to be honest, I am a fanboy of NVidia for real but I'm just saving money here and trying to secure future for DX12 games and the ones that will require 4GB VRam at the very least.

Those are way more expensive here, don't know why. This xfx card is $233, and the ones you mentioned are all around $260 for some reason. Def looks better than reference card. I'll look after reviews.

If you like playing DX11 games, pick the Pascal, if you like DX12/Vulkan games pick the RX470.
Modern games are VRAM hungry, so the more VRAM the better.

the thing is 1060 is a mid range card. it is not meant to max out every game setting available such as ultra texture or 8x MSAA that can use a lot of VRAM. and in most recent games that i see the difference between high and ultra sometimes are not really noticeable to the eyes even with side by side picture but ultra end up using bajillion more VRAM than high preset. heck even going from medium to high sometimes very subtle change in graphic. in TPU review of 1060 3GB even at 4k res where the extra VRAM can be advantageous 1060 still come out on top in 15 out of 18 title being tested, pretty much tied in two title and only being faster than 1060 in one title although the game also faster in RX470 at 1080p which point the issue probably more than just VRAM issue.

and DX12 is much more complicated topic. some people thinking AMD have definite advantage in DX12 while they can gain more performance more than nvidia hardware due to how their architecture work but it is not a definite advantage. just look the recently released Forza 3. while polaris perform really good in that game anything that is not polaris are having issues. in one of digital foundry test it was very surprise to see 970 end up being faster than 390 where as DX12 often give the edge to AMD hardware. and then look at DXMD. in tech report test DX12 give massive stutter to AMD hardware in DX12.

Solution

I would love to mention Rise of Tomb Raider where 1060 wins. I haven't tried my GPU yet, but I'm fine cause I saved like 30 dollars 😛

In my country, the Zotac GTX 1060 3GB ($180) and Sapphire Nitro+ RX 470 4GB ($215).
Should I go with Zotac to save some $35 because I'm gaming at 1080p 60fps with medium-high settings, or get the RX 470 to play with my current LG 23" Freesync monitor ?
