Hi all,

Should these devices be compatible? I have the TP link kit all set up and working fine. I am trying to add teh ZyXel and cannot get it to recognize the existing powerline network. I thought these devices were all on the same homelink standard. Any advice?

Solution
I doubt that they are compatible, the AV1200 units (like the 8010P) use the ground (3rd) plug unlike the previews generations and they are different brands, which is an issue.

If you stay with the same brand they are often backward compatible by downgrading the new unit to the older unit performance.

And even if you could get the PLA4231 to work with the 8010 you would slow your network.

That said, you should be able to use the PLA4231 pair for other uses, just not working with the 8010P set.

HERE is a TP-Link FAQ that addresses that issue.

Thanks for the quick reply RB - for my own education, can you tell me what standard each of the devices is using? I recognize that the network speed will reduce to the lowest speed device, but according to the TP LINK FAQ, "If using an adapter from a different brand, they should be compatible with TP-Link adapters if they’re using the same standard. However, the pairing and configuration methods for other adapters will be different and not supported by TP-Link software. We recommend all adapters used on a network be the same brand."

Doesnt that mean this should work, even if not optimally?

To add the real world problem - my brother is staying with me for a few weeks at the furthest point of the house. I have an existing TP Link powerline network - (which is awesome by the way) The Zyxel was the cheapest wifi powerline option I saw and thought it would be compatible. I do not mind reducing my network speed for the next few weeks... Can this be made to work?

Solution: Used the TP link software and added the device with the powerline ID. Zyxel software was useless and the quick connect buttons (WPS & Encrypt/Reset) were not helpful. Similarly, the pairing feature on the TP link devices did not work.Hope that helps some one!

Nice job, yes it should (and apparently now does work) just at the lower speed. Think of it like using wireless with a legacy G device that slows down wireless N to 54Mb/s from 150 or 300Mb/s.

Interesting that the TP-Link software was the answer, I primarily use TP-Link adapters and other gear for home installs and do like their software.
