Windows 10 is lighter on resources than previous versions but it will still happily hog all the resources you have. One frequent issue with any Windows installation is that of disk space, especially if you’re downloading a couple of gigabytes of update and installing it. If you’re having these issues and need to fix storage problems during installation of Windows 10 Anniversary Update, here’s what you do.
Fix storage problems during installation of Windows 10 Anniversary Update
First, check on how much free space you have on your disk drive(s).
1. Open Windows Explorer and click This PC.
2. Check under Devices and drives and make sure you have at least 5GB of free space on your C: drive. Some of this will be used in the download and some for the installed update.
3. Retry the Windows 10 Anniversary Update if you have space.
If you have less than 5GB, it’s time to free up some space.
1. Navigate to Control Panel and Uninstall a program.
2. Uninstall any program(s) on your C: drive that you no longer use or could live without for a while.
3. Free up enough space for the upgrade and retry.
Or:
1. Open a command prompt as an administrator.
2. Type or paste ‘cleanmgr’.
3. Select OK when your C: drive is selected.
4. Click Cleanup system files.
5. Check all options that use disk space, except Windows Setup temporary files as this is the downloaded Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
6. Let the process complete.
Hopefully these steps will free up enough disk space to allow the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to install. If it doesn’t, you’re going to have to keep removing programs or files until you have the space.
