There is a known issue with Windows 10 freezing after installing the Anniversary Update. Microsoft has acknowledged it as a bug and are hopefully working on a fix. The resolution seems to be mixed. Many people have said a clean install from an ISO doesn’t fix the issue, but I have fixed a client machine doing that very thing.
So while it may not work for you, I’ll list it here are one of only two options you have open to you. You can either try a clean install using installation media or roll back to the previous version of Windows 10. Whatever works best for you.
Stop Windows 10 freezing after installing the Anniversary Update
First let’s perform a fresh update.
1. Download a copy of the Microsoft media creation tool.
2. Select the version of Windows you are currently using, 32-bit or 64-bit.
3. Choose to create ‘installation media for another PC’.
4. Select the other options as you see fit.
5. Burn to a DVD or USB.
6. Set your computer to boot from the media and install.
As mentioned, while this method hasn’t worked for many users, I have used it effectively to stop Windows freezing. Up to you whether you try it or not.
Alternatively:
1. Navigate to Settings, Update & security.
2. Click ‘Get started’ under ‘Go back to an earlier build’.
3. Follow the steps in the rollback wizard to return your Windows 10 to its pre-update state.
There is currently no ETA for a fix for this issue.
