I would have a look at some of HPs ultrabook offerings. I'm willing to bet the XPS will be the best option though. It's probably one of the best ultrabooks on the market, if not the best.

Get better processor cooling. Get an i7.

I'm guessing the light switch was also a switch for the outlet your computer was plugged into. A computer being shut down this way can become damaged, it can take one shutdown, it can take 1000 shutdowns. The damage could be minimal and it could be really serious. My PC was power cycled...

Fans will spin when they're needed. Cards will often idle with the fans off. Test under load and see if the fans spin up. If they don't the system will just shut down before things overheat to the point of causing damage anyway.
