Finding the short is quite tricky business. You could try switching out the mobo or take the computer to a professional. Or hope someone more clever on this subject replies ;)

Sounds like your saying it turned off because you removed the gpu or tampered with it. Not because it was doing a regular boot off. I'm no expert on this subject but could something have shorted? Weird that the fans turned on a couple of times though.
