You're going to need a little more GPU power for 1080p than for 720p. Regardless I would avoid the 5400 laptops, using a drive that slow tends to be asking for trouble. Yes there are some good 5400 drives that aren't too slow but no one uses them.... so it's best to just go for the 7200.

How many VMs and what kind? CPU or Memory heavy? Hosting off of a ssd or hdd? VMware, ESXi, or something else?

Also I really doubt that this issue is caused by bad firmware in your case unless you found several people who have confirmed it as a firmware issue when using your model hdd (it would need to be the same batch too).

Why are you trying to update your BIOS? It sounds like you have a corrupted boot record (caused by various random issues) or/and a failing HDD.

It sounds like your MBR either got corrupted or overwritten somehow. It should of been repairable with the right tools and know-how but I think we're past that point. Make sure you do a full disk check before you re-install Windows.
