News Google is killing the web with AI Overviews – I made an extension to block them

There's a place and a time for every technology. GAI continues to hallucinate and, even when it is correct, it is not "responsible" for whatever advice it gives. If I write an article with bad advice, I will hear about it from the readers. Who stands behind the advice given by the AI bot? Whose...

News Google is killing the web with AI Overviews – I made an extension to block them

Google could have continued to have AI chat as a separate tab without polluting the core product with it. If people wanted to switch to getting answers from AI, they could have. It forced bad information on the user. Also, I'll quote my second grade teacher who lectured me when I got caught...

My week with Linux: I'm dumping Windows for Ubuntu to see how it goes

In my case, I'm using Elements rather than CC. Even if it worked, I couldn't activate it under Linux if I want to go back to Windows at any point because that's another activation. Software licenses weren't meant for dual-boot PCs.

My week with Linux: I'm dumping Windows for Ubuntu to see how it goes

So this is on a ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 12) and it did go to sleep. I was wrong; what happened is that it did not hibernate after going to sleep. So when I was home for several days and used my desktop there, the battery ran out. On a Windows PC, the battery would get eaten up more slowly and...

Question What would you want from a Tom's Hardware browser extension?

Hi All, As some of you may know, I program Chrome browser extensions (also compatible with Edge and Opera GX). I currently have one called "Bye, Bye Google AI" which has 37K users and blocks Google AI overview results from the SERP. Anyway, I was thinking about making a free Tom's Hardware...

News Linux or Landfill? End of Windows 10 Leaves PC Charities with Tough Choice

While there may be ways to get around the hardware requirement, I don't think that PCs which do will get the benefit of continued security updates.

News We need your help to shape the future of Tom’s Hardware

Funny you should mention. As I type this, I'm working in beta on a tool that replicates the Anandtech Bench tool (https://www.anandtech.com/bench), but for Tom's Hardware. I have it working in beta right now. Unclear when and if we'll be able to roll it out and whether it becomes a premium...

News We need your help to shape the future of Tom’s Hardware

I write that article and I appreciate your feedback. The problem is that we are trying to hit a very low and specific price point. We have to cut corners on a build to get the parts list that low. On a system that underpowered, I don't think you need a Gold or even Bronze class PSU. Would it...

News We need your help to shape the future of Tom’s Hardware

We don't use AI for our writing (or really for anything). We do have an AI chatbot on the home page that people can play with, but we do all of our own writing.

News Microsoft Recall screenshots credit cards and Social Security numbers, even with the "sensitive information" filter enabled

I thought about this and, after seeing some comments to this effect, I went back and tested with my actual credit card number. The same thing happened.

How to upgrade your PS5 storage with an SSD for as little as $73 (1TB) or $113 (2TB)

We tested with a standard PS5, but according to user reviews, the Sabrent supposedly fits in a slim as well. Can't guarantee it but it's pretty slim.
