News AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs May Feature Vega 12, Vega 15 Graphics

Sure it is. The 8GB of HBM2 on Vega56/64 are pretty tiny, (each 2 x 4GB dies about 100sq mm), there is more than enough room for one (4GB) in a one-chiplet (or even 2 chiplet) CPU.

Question Is there any way to measure the current draw (or power draw) for my CPU?

I didn't know about current clamps, thought it had to be in series... this is definitely what I need. Thanks. Not too bothered about a really accurate measurement, as it's mostly aesthetic.

Question Water cooling effectiveness on GPU vs CPU

I have both CPU and GPU under pretty much equivalent AIO liquid coolers. But when both are under heavy load, GPU core temp is way lower than CPU temp. I gather via Google this is usually the case in open loop setups too. As the card's TDP is a fair bit higher than the CPU's TDP I would have...

    Question CPU running so hot

Are you using the default fan curve (or at least a sensible fan curve)? If so and there is nothing wrong with your mount/thermal paste, then I can only assume it's a faulty cooler (check what actual RPMs you are getting) or a faulty CPU.

Question Is there any way to measure the current draw (or power draw) for my CPU?

I'm guessing I need to cut into one of the wires in one or both of the CPU power connector cables so the ammeter will be in series with the power in. If so, which wire? Does it matter which power connector? Motivation: I want to put a funky old-school rotary analog ammeter into my build used to...

Question Is it safe to subject a liquid cooler to temps over 100C?

I realise this temperature is way too high for a CPU or GPU. But in this case, I have a Peltier module between the GPU and the water block, so temperatures could be well in excess of the actual GPU temperature.

    Question Molex wattage

I'm informed that molex (4 pin) connector max wattage is typically 11A * 12V = 132W. However, on my PSU, the three availavble molex connectors are all on the same cable. From my limited knowledge of power circuits, that would imply to me that any of the molex connectors ought to be capable of...

    Question PWM to analog voltage

Hi. Anyone know of an adapter or hub capable of producing a steady(ish) DC voltage from a PWM fan header? I.e. if the PWM header is set to 70%, I want 70% of 12V = 8.4V out on the 3 pin output (can be 2 pin, don't really need the tach). I've seen ICs/arduino circuits for this, but I don't want...

Does MSI B450M Mortar have LEDs?

I think it refers to the headers too. I had the B350M Mortar and there were lights on the board which were always on and always red. Its a f###ing pain in the a### - why assume your customer wants red lights? If you're going to put any fixed colour lights on a board, at least make them white so...

Question How can I remove metal thermal paste from a CPU socket?

Ethyl Acetate is sold as acetone-free nail varnish remover, and also as electronics cleaner. Acetone can attack plastics in PCBs but I'm pretty sure Ethyl Acetate is okay. But in the end I used IPA (not exactly flooded ... a whole capful) plus vacuum cleaner on full power - mine's a pretty...

Question How can I remove metal thermal paste from a CPU socket?

Thank you. AM4 boards don't look like that, however - no pins are visible on the socket, it's all hidden behind some black plastic. Funnily enough, the video shows exactly what I did with the CPU pins, IPA applied via the IPA bottle cap, soft artist's brush soaked in IPA. Nail varnish is...

Question How can I remove metal thermal paste from a CPU socket?

BTW, I've cleaned the pins on the CPU thoroughly ... I used a soft (artist's) brush soaked in IPA and I'm pretty sure there's no paste there. So, yes, it's got to be right down in the socket. Before letting metal paste anywhere near my mobo, I applied clear nail varnish on all the parts of the...

Question How can I remove metal thermal paste from a CPU socket?

Thank you. I will look into the product you've mentioned. I've used metal TIMs so often that I became blasé about the risks! You're right ... one needs to be forensic about them, I clearly wasn't this time.

Question How can I remove metal thermal paste from a CPU socket?

Very foolishly, having applied some conductonaut to both CPU and heatsink, I attempted to screw the cooler in without first putting the CPU back in the socket. D'oh. Unsurprisingly, my mobo didn't like it, so obviously some liquid metal has got into the CPU socket (AM4 board, if that matters)...

Mounting stuff where it oughtn't be mounted

The NOFAN would be for GPU. I know it's a CPU cooler, but I'm pretty confident I can drill holes in the right places and use machine screws to attach it (probably to a GTX 1070). Thinking of the Zalman copper cooler for the CPU -...
