Thanks for all the help. I tried a few different suggestions mentioned here, but nothing seemed to work. After a couple days I tried to open a different Skyrim saved game and everything worked perfectly. I guess the game I kept trying to load somehow became corrupted? Anyways, it's all fine...

I've been playing Skyrim no problem for a couple weeks. This afternoon I did a long session with no interruption. I closed Skyrim to eat dinner and came back. After that, every time I restart the game it runs for about 5 seconds before it crashes to the desktop. There's no alert, no crash...
