    correct, that usb stick is the media installation tool. i did leave one of my SSDs connected that was wiped clean. is the media simply not bootable? i thought that was the only way to install windows on a new PC?

    Have you tried a search from the start menu with a keyword like "network" or "internet." It may be possible to pull that up from doing this.

    Should I switch my 290x for a 970?

    I have the GTX970 and I love it. It doesn't run too hot even with dual monitors running high resolution videos or gaming. As you stated before, a cooler card will last longer. If you are able to, definitely switch to the GTX970. Anyways, video cards aren't that hard to remove and install.
