Question CPU power supply for MSI B450 Tomahawk Max

Someone on another forum has suggested that my graphics card might simply be too old to work with the rest of the rig. If so, would a GT 1030 or RX 550 be suitable? I don't need much in the way of gaming performance, just something I can use for photo and video editing. Any thoughts?

Question CPU power supply for MSI B450 Tomahawk Max

Thanks for this advice. I've sorted the power supply cable; it fitted fine in daylight! I'll also bear in mind the possible need for a new PSU. Yes, I am using a discrete graphics card, and that is powered and connected.

Question CPU power supply for MSI B450 Tomahawk Max

I've sorted out the power cable issue; by fitting the two 4+4 modules together I've got them both to fit. But I still have the common no video issue. I've tried clearing CMOS, flashing the BIOS (7C02v39) and moving the memory modules around. All the debug LEDs usually light up apart from the...

Question CPU power supply for MSI B450 Tomahawk Max

I've just tried a new build of a Ryzen 3700X on an MSI B450 Tomahawk Max and have come across what appears to be a common problem of getting no video output. I'm in the course of trying various solutions proposed on different forums (having done the obvious things like checking alternative...

[SOLVED] How reliable are on-line speed tests?

Thanks particularly to bill001g for a very helpful and detailed answer. In real life terms, I already had very good speeds (but the connector on my cable was broken so tended to fall out). Now they are slightly faster, even allowing for variation between servers. So no complaints!

[SOLVED] How reliable are on-line speed tests?

Thanks. I appreciate the importance of where the server is located; I tried Ookla again and with a server only 4 miles away it gave me 290 mb/s. But what sort of location or distance could give me only 12?! I'm still suspicious.

[SOLVED] Lights turn on but nobody home

If I remember rightly (both chips are of course fairly elderly by now) they both use a socket 1155 but the third generation (Ivy Bridge) needed at least an upgraded BIOS to run in a 2nd generation (Sandy Bridge) mobo. You should be able to download and flash the BIOS. If you are very unlucky...

[SOLVED] How reliable are on-line speed tests?

I've just replaced my ancient Cat 5e cable from a Virgin 3 Hub with a Cat 6 so I decided to test my speeds. Previously Ookla speedtest gave around 140 mb/s (it's a nominal 350mb/s connection). Now Ookla on line gives 250, the Ookla app 150 but various others much slower rates, including one (on...

Can I sysprep a system running Windows 8.1 that has been upgraded from 8.0?

Hi Thanks for your message. In fact, I went ahead with the re-build and just hoped for the best. I thought there was at least a chance that with an Intel to Intel upgrade and a mobo from the same manufacturer (Gigabyte) Windows might be able to cope. I was right: after a quick system repair...

Can I sysprep a system running Windows 8.1 that has been upgraded from 8.0?

I plan to upgrade my mobo and CPU. Though both old and new systems are Intel, they are 5 generations apart so I know I should do a fresh install. But I'd like to try to avoid the problem by running sysprep. Windows 8 was a clean install, but I've upgraded that to 8.1. Does that make sysprep...
