    Daif, I finally resolved my problem by re-installing Windows (actually 'upgrading' it so as to avoid having to re-install all my applications). So it was definitely a windows corruption in my case. Yours is different I think. Could it be your laptop and smartphone are set to use a different DNS...

    I’ve tried “obtain automatically” and setting it to google (8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4) It makes no difference to the behaviour The same settings are returned but ipconfig in both Win7 and the XP VM

    My Win7 64 bit pro laptop has lost the ability to resolve urls. Literal IP addresses still work in a browser address bar You can use DNSlookup etc successfully from a command prompt You can ping from a command prompt MS Virtual machine is installed and from within XP mode the browsers work fine...
