Hi Fellow Storage Nerdz, I am looking get Synology DS1621xs+ and hope someone here can tell me if my intended use case is doable. And if so, how? I'm trying to make is a fast, responsive NAS with lots of storage that can intelligently auto-allocate data between a primary SSD array and a...

[SOLVED] How to Setup RAID 1 on AMD Ryzen 5950x

I have the bios settings with SATA set to RAID and a RAID 1 array with both disks, but neither HDD (nor the array) is visible in Windows. The link you provided mentioned adding the array as part of setting up Windows on install, but Windows is already installed on my computer. Do you know what...

[SOLVED] How to Setup RAID 1 on AMD Ryzen 5950x

Hi All, Help! I have been using RAID 1 for years, but only on Intel setups. My new Ryzen 5950x/RTX 3090 with hardline water cooling is great, but I can't for the life of me figure out what I should do to setup RAID 1. I have two (2) working SATA HDDs that are 8TB each, and I just want a...

Question Security - Employer IP Phone at Home

The guest WiFi is actually a great, simple idea! I told them I'd do it only if they would get a WiFi version so I wouldn't have to run a stupid wire through my entire place. They get the guest WiFi. Eff them!

Question Security - Employer IP Phone at Home

They haven't given me the exact model number yet, but I told them I'm not down for the wired version. They said there is a WiFi version, so I think I can put that on a guest network to isolate it. It's still F'n stupid. Employers can require equipment in their office, but this is my home. I...

Question Security - Employer IP Phone at Home

Hi All, I know about hardware but I have a major blind spot when it comes to data security in networking, so I need some guru advice and hope you can help. With Covid, I've been working from home for almost a year now. Just today, my job said we need to connect an IP phone to our home...

Best HDD drives for Home Server

With a standard RAID 1, you'll be good to go. It's just a mirror of each drive. I edited my original response to note that I have a RAID 1, not a RAID 0 (oops). Each drive can read individually in most cases if the motherboard dies.

Best HDD drives for Home Server

I have the Segate enterprise drives, and they've been running solid in a RAID 1 since mid-2013, every day, 24-7. That said, the whole point of RAID is to allow some drives to fail, so you'll be okay getting cheaper drives. Personally, I like to have at least some good drives in my array. If...

Need help formatting my 2nd HDD

The surest way to do this is to just connect your second drive to another computer using an external USB drive enclosure. They are about $10 for a 2.5 in and $20 for a 3.5 in. I put Amazon links to both sizes for you. Once you put your second drive in the enclosure, connect it via USB to...

Secondary hard drive can't be initialized

You gotta take the drive out, stick it in an external enclosure, and see if it works. Just plug the enclosure (which you can get on Amazon for really cheap) in a different working computer to test. If you leave it in your laptop, there are too many variables. It could be a variety of things...

    Concerned: Caution Reallocated Sector Count

That's expected about right now given that the drive is 5 yrs old. You're actually doing pretty good to have it this long. It's a 2 yr warranty drive, and the expected fail time on standard HDDs is generally 5 years. In any case, just take the drive out completely before doing anything else...

What components do molex cables plug into?

Molex is a legacy plug that most things don't use anymore, but certain components (e.g. coolers and lighting) still use it. EVGA makes only two 450 watt Bronze power supplies. Here is the instruction manual for one (i.e. B3 Series), and here is the instruction manual for the other (i.e. Bronze...
