Sure enough, it was a thermal issue, the cooler didn't seat properly as a heatsink on the ram caused it to lift at one corner. Problem solved (:

I've been using the the latest Intel ones with no problems since ultimately the Z-87 architecture is defined by Intel and Asus are conforming to those specifications. In this particular instance I found the drivers offered by Asus were merely the stock Intel ones repackaged.
