    Yeah, have to conclude that all I've done has really only lead me to the sad conclusion that the SDD is faulty. DOA :-( Tried to even install Windows on it from their install boot dvd but that also, whilst being able to see the disk, couldn't install on it. Hardly a surprise but worth a go ...

    But yeah, I think the conclusion I'm coming to is that I've done a lot and all its done is prove that the SSD itself is just faulty :-( Tried to install windows on it and the windows installer couldn't deal with it despite seeing that it existed. Its a kaput SSD :-( DOA :-(

    EaseUs Partition Master (the free part) has a surface test and I left it running on the drive overnight (for comparison it surface tests the 64GB Samsung 830 I have in just a couple of minutes !) and after running for over 12hours had only got to 0.63% of the disk.........so something ain't...

    Yeah, I don't really want a root kit or virus plonked on my machine for the sake of $11. If they took the money but said "If it can't solve your problem uninstall it and we'll give you a refund" I'd go for it !!!!

    Thanks for the suggestions. The saga continues ! Turns out Parted Magic is $11 - fine if it works but I don't know if it will ! Easus Partition Manager (EPM) is a bit sneaky. It lets you go through a bunch of analysis with no mention of a cost and then if you want to make an actual change...

    Have just tried Samsung Magician Secure Erase, booting from the usb flash drive it creates into a basic linux to format the disk, but when formatting attempts to begin I get an error and it does not proceed :-( The utility can see the SSD fine. The error is "Error 25 Selected drive is...

    Odd that it insists I create a bootable USB stick first, I don't want to erase my boot drive ! Will try shortly but expect a fail :-(

    If the SSD was DOA surely Windows wouldn't see it in Device Manager or Disk Management or in DOS DISKPART ?

    Thanks. Have downloaded and am trying to get to grips with it. When I try to do a Diagnostic Scan on it, it fails pretty quickly and says "The selected Samsung Drive is Locked. Diagnostic Scan is not supported on this drive"........Curious ?!

    can select the disk in DISKPART and clean it but creating a partition doesn't work and neither does trying to convert it to either option (gpt or mbr) :-( create partition primary DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
