My gut tells me PSU problems. A tower freezing and never unfreezing tells me there is something wrong with the voltage. Start here. A dead CPU is highly unlikely, especially on the 640 which were overclocking friendly.

Every PSU is different, even within a single brand. You're going to need to find the wiring diagram for the specific model you have, or make your own diagram very very carefully. You're going to need to learn which tools you'll need for measuring (voltages and length), crimping and removing...

Not a fan of OCZ SSD's or Toshiba Drives, other than that you're on point. I prefer Western Digital for all of my platter drive needs, have always been worth the extra investment for me. I have a WD 750GB Black from 08 that's still going strong.

You should use it for nothing more than a budget office PC build, use it for scrap metal, or sell it on craigslist for a few bucks. Not a reliable unit for anything above 250watt
