32bit operating systems limit you to 4GB of ram. and due to the way the computer does data size conversions you are unable to use the full 4GB. If you want to use more RAM you will need a 64bit OS.

If the screen is just black, the hard drive may be corrupt. If you have a spare hard drive with an OS on it, see if the system will boot with it. if it does then that means the original hard drive is most likely corrupt and a re installation is required.
