I recently switched to a sli 970 build and I have to say how much the temps increased surprised me. My card never got above 60 C but now my top card frequently hits mid 70's or higher when bench marking. I plan on adding more case fans to help alleviate this problem a little bit.

If the rumors are true with DX12 the VRAM will be able to stack for SLI cards so you could then have 7gb of fast memory and 1gb of the slow memory. Plus two 970's outperform a 980ti. So unless you could get a good deal reselling your 970 I would get another and SLI them.
