Its a Thermaltake toughpower 550w 80+ Gold. From what I read its fine, but seeing that made me second guess myself.

is the Gigabyte radeon r9 280x paired with an intel core i3 6100 fine being paired with a 550w power supply? It seemed like plenty, but then I read somewhere a person recommending a 700w power supply? is this not overkill?

Yep, if either one is in the first slot but i dont plug anything into the second then the computer boots up fine, if I plug anything into the second it doesnt boot up. Any way to narrow down which one it is? Or do I just need to send one back and get a replacement and hope it works out?

took both out and reseated one and it turned on. put the second one back in and it wouldn't. took out the second one and moved the first one that I knew worked to the other ram slot and the computer did not boot. does this mean its the motherboard?

there are 2 connections I can use on the hard drive I have. both are the same general shape as the sata cable, but one is bigger. am I supposed to have a cable for the larger connection or is that one supposed to be empty? I know in my laptop both connectors plug in but I don't have a larger...
