Question Optiplex 7040 not detecting discrete GPU

Thanks so much for the response! The power supply is regular ATX but does date back to 2007. I did wonder how it would just know to turn on so that seems very possible. Is there any chance you could point me in the direction of what specifically I need to do?

Question Optiplex 7040 not detecting discrete GPU

I really appreciate the responses so far thank you! The fans on the GPU are spinning up on boot but I have also confirmed that happens without the 6-pin connected so I'm not sure it means much, for what it's worth the fan on the second PSU does not spin which may mean something. The setup is...

Question Optiplex 7040 not detecting discrete GPU

Kia Ora, Hello, I have recently purchased a Dell Optiplex 7040 and I want to add a discrete GPU. I consider myself to be very much a beginner when it comes to this stuff but I have attempted a great number of things and cannot get the system to even register a PCIe device. I have tried basic...

HDMI cable stops the motherboard's audio output

Are you using windows 10? If so then click on the speaker logo on the task bar. Above the volume slider there should be the name of the audio device currently being used. Click that and a drop down should appear, there you should find all detected audio devices. Select your headphones from...

Motherboard doesn't post to screen. It lights up and beeps however.

The beep means that something is not registering correctly, troubleshooting will be difficult unless you have other compatible parts that you know work.

with kabylake you can now overclock far beyond what your graphics card needs. is there any benchmarks that....

In things like gaming the CPU is leveraged highly, more in some titles than others but your GPU still does a fair s but of the work in most games. So having a fast CPU will not change the graphics but push more frames allowing you to turn up graphical settings.

    GTX 1080 underperforming

A couple of things could be your issue. Yes you were correct in saying that the CPU and RAM are a bottleneck. Also update the drivers directly off the Nvidia website. Is your PC prebuilt? If so for Bloatware which could be clogging up your system. Also check thermals to make sure that there is...

cougar stx series 80+ 650w can match gtx 580?

Yeah just putting it out there because you mentioned getting a 10 series card, also it makes me cringe when I see a GTX 1080 in a system with a $20 bare minimum wattage Power Supply.

Should I upgrade my processor for a gtx 970

Yes there will be a bottleneck but it is hard to say how bad. And yes the 970 is a great card. Do you game? if so why are you running Xeon's? they are typically a server chip.

cougar stx series 80+ 650w can match gtx 580?

The B1 series is fine for running a medium end system but if you ever upgrade to a 10 series card I would recommend getting a PSU with japanese capacitors and good over and under voltage protection. Use http://www.jonnyguru.com/ if you need help.

EVGA Gforce 1080 compatible with Asus Z170-a motherboard

Sounds like you have a dead card, but Asus are right you can not be entirely sure unless you test it with another motherboard that you know works, Maybe ask a friend if you test your card in his system. If it works well then potentially all the PCI-E slots on your board are dead but if it...
