Question Weekend Question: How Did You Learn About Tech Before the Internet?

Wow, well, it all started when my dad brought home our 386 and I started learning from him. Then we got a 486 and by that time I was 10 or so and started getting hands on with hardware configurations. I read manuals, took electronics electives in school, met a lot of people that I swapped...

[SOLVED] Will i be able to do light gaming on this rig?

Well, that all depends on the settings. You should expect it to be perfectly playable, but as for a solid number? I'm not really sure. The 560Ti is only slightly faster than a GT 1030, so... probably 60 fps or better.

Question Could my CPU be causing my GPU to crash?

It sounds like you might not be feeding the RX 560 enough power. Most RX 560s have an external power connection. Is there one on your card and is it connected? I'm also wondering if your PSU is ok. I've got a Raidmax PSU, and I've had some problems with power. I'd have replaced it if I had the...

[SOLVED] Will i be able to do light gaming on this rig?

LoL and CSGO are famously known for running on potatoes, GTA V, not so much. It should be doable on those games with lower graphics settings, but GTA V might not be the best experience. Also, make sure you have at least 8GB of RAM. That will help.

News Working from Home: Tips and Tools to Keep You Productive

I find that I am actually more productive at home. I have an issued work laptop, but the majority of my work isn't dependent on it. I find that I'm much more productive on my laptop as it is faster and a lot more powerful. It also has a larger screen and I have a monitor I connect it to so I...

News Soldered AMD Bristol Ridge APU Arrives on Biostar's New Mini-ITX Board

Yes it would be good for a HTPC, but I see more of an emulation device here. Throw this thing into a tiny case and have a great little device for sticking under the TV and playing games. If this thing is priced right it wouldn't be too bad. Heck if they priced it right they could be in Raspberry...

News Macbooks With Arm CPUs Arriving by Next Year, Kuo Says

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that we won't see an ARM based MacBook Pro. ARM lacks the x86 instructions needed for actual high performance professional work loads. It is much more likely that this fabled ARM based system will be a consumer level product like a MacBook Air or...

[SOLVED] Does an anti static mat offer enough protection alone?

I'm pretty sure you have nothing to worry about. As long as he was discharging regularly he shouldn't build up enough of a charge to be dangerous. Honestly, I've built dozens of PCs and never had one damaged by static. In college to prove my point I took my CPU out of my system, combed my hair...

News Full 10th-Gen Comet Lake CPU Tray Pricing Listed

It is vexing that even with competition Intel hasn't been pushed to drop prices. Seriously, an i5 for near as makes no difference $300? It is basically an i7 8086K with a slightly higher base clock. That CPU is 2 years old at this point. The same number of cores and threads for only a modest...

[SOLVED] RX 570 artifacted when starting pc and restarting after being in the login screen

Complain and return it. ASAP. This thing is broken... possibly a scam. Suspiciously it is referencing Polaris 10 in the drivers there, The 570 is a Polaris 20 card. Polaris 10 would be an RX 470. Someone may have flashed an RX 570 BIOS onto it to try to get more money. They probably broke the...

[SOLVED] This is my computer. Discuss.

This. So much this. For an unfathomable reason the i7 doesn't depreciate in value until it is quite obsolete. I was looking into an i7 for my Haswell based setup and it would be cheaper to get a Ryzen 5 2600 AND motherboard. Honestly, upgrading Intel systems is not cost effective. Never get an...

News Shove 2.5-Inch Storage Into PCIe Expansion Slots With This Adapter

M.2 in most instances is a more elegant solution. A PCI-E M.2 adapter card costs less and takes up less space. Add to that the availability of small form factor solutions and M.2 is a better format. Sure, I'd probably rather have this for older 2.5" drives, but not many people have those just...

News Shove 2.5-Inch Storage Into PCIe Expansion Slots With This Adapter

This is interesting. I can think of a few instances where it might be useful, but in most of those a more elegant solution exists. Now something like this in an older PCI slot would be amazing for a retro gaming PC. It would make a lot more sense than a compact flash or SD solution. You could...
