I once found that I needed to right click on the desktop and open the Screen Resolution window, then click Detect. If that doesn't work, try turning the computer of, plugging the second display in and then booting the system again.

That sounds like there's something new in your system that's slowing it down. Defragment your HDD, do a system cleanup and stop any programs you don't need running at start up from running. Then do a full system scan of all your drives.

It's likely that you have to re-install drivers from the manufacturer's website. Or just try to let Windows install them automatically. What's the device?
