I do not have my graphics card in at the moment. Just running (or trying ) on board graphics. When GPU is in I get the same reactions. Cycles then drops after it can't find it.

Update, while we were talking I was letting my computer sit with cmos battery out. After plugging it back in, the ram is lighting up now and staying lit. That's as far as we got.
