    Question bcdboot vs bootsect

Thanks, SkyNetRising & TerryLaze. I already knew what an MBR is, sorta. I didn't ask about it because I didn't think about how it's related to the booting sequence. TerryLaze's explanation makes that clearer. I'm familiar with most of the more common commands of Diskpart. Under Part 2 of this...

    Question bcdboot vs bootsect

Thanks for the quick reply. It will take some careful scrutiny to digest everything. I'm a pro in my own field and often come across literature that's technically accurate but nevertheless looks ambiguous and confusing to a less experienced reader - as in the old helicopter joke about MS.

    Question bcdboot vs bootsect

I've seen both bcdboot.exe and bootsect.exe used to make a storage device bootable. I've read up a bit about both commands but can't quite grasp where one is more suitable than the other. Maybe being in my 70s and never having had a formal training in computers has something to do with it ;) ...

    Question Offline hex-to-decimal converter

Thanks, I didn't know about this feature. It works in Windows 10 too.

    Question Offline hex-to-decimal converter

Thanks, but when I tried to run the program and agreed to the T&C, it goes off and now I can't even get it started again. I run Windows 10 22H2.

    Question Offline hex-to-decimal converter

Can someone please recommend a free offline hexadecimal to decimal converter/calculator for Windows? I know the formula and can do simple values in my head or with a standard calculator but doing higher values is tedious.

Question The "double-click to open new tab" extension for Google Chrome has stopped working ?

I've been using Ctrl+Left click to open a link in a new tab. I find it more convenient than Right click then 'Open in new tab'. It usually also works on websites that don't accept right clicks. However, starting from perhaps a few weeks ago, this no longer always works. Probably since some update.

Question Backing up data to an SSD ?

I appreciate your interest and concerns, everyone. But I made it clear at the beginning that I'm asking about the technology, not about the best way to back up data. I know about - and use - other methods of backup - online, HDD, optical and thumb drives, etc. SSDs are mechanically robust...

Question Backing up data to an SSD ?

Let's keep it simple and think in terms of archiving data that will seldom need to be accessed or altered. OK, let's say I have a drive installed in a computer that's in regular use but this particular drive is never read or written to after initially backing up some data on it. Are you saying...

Question Backing up data to an SSD ?

I have a SATA-USB adapter and am thinking of using some SATA SSDs as one method of backing up my data. I understand that SSDs can lose data over time from cell leakage so that they have to be "recharged" now and then. So, is it enough to plug in the drive via the adapter every few months? And...

Question Dual Channel higher latency or Single Channel lower latency ?

Always? I see this double bandwidth thing everywhere and I understand the principle. But how does it translate to real world performance? Most side-by-side test results favour dual channel by up to ~10% in some cases; and by less than 1% in some. In a few cases, the single channel actually does...

Question Dual Channel higher latency or Single Channel lower latency ?

Which RAM will be faster - dual channel, higher latency or single channel, lower latency? Example: DDR5 5600MHz - 2x8GB CL46 or 1x16GB CL36 If it depends on the application, please give examples.

Question "Business" monitors for other applications

I have no intention of buying this monitor. I don't game or edit videos either. I design electronics. My question was asked out of academic interest, to gain background knowledge that might become useful later. Definitions of a business monitor on the internet include sharp images and accurate...

Question "Business" monitors for other applications

I've only recently come across the term "business monitor" and I'd like to have an idea of what such monitors are like in other applications. Right now I'm looking at an ad for MSI Pro MP275Q. The specs are: IPS panel, 1mS response, 2560x1440, 100Hz, 100% sRGB, 1.07B colours, 1300:1 contrast...
