Question No BIOS after aborted boot

OK, pulling the CMOS battery worked, settings restored, all is good, lesson learned -- I won't try to boot with a cloned boot drive attached again. But as it was non-bootable, I still don't understand why its presence knocked the BIOS for a loop.

Question No BIOS after aborted boot

Tuf Gaming X570 Plus with latest BIOS, Ryzen 5600x, recent clean Win 11 install to 970 EVO Plus NVMe has been 100% stable. This morning I created fresh recover/ restore tools on bootable flash drive and DVD. And then, on the belt + suspenders + overalls principle, used AOMEI to clone the NVMe...

    [SOLVED] Desktop upgrade sequence

Thanks (for the 'best practices' links, too -- I've been through all this on multiple upgrades since first PC build circa 1985, but great to have the latest on my tablet before touching hardware.) I've flashed to 2409 BIOS, set up Asus firmware TPM 2.0 which Win10 health check is now happy with...

    [SOLVED] Desktop upgrade sequence

Current desktop is Ryzen 5 2400G on Asus Prime B450M-A, 16GB RAM, Win 10 Home. I added a 4GB GeForce GTX 1650 and no longer use the CPU's integrated graphics; also the 2400G is incompatible with Win 11. No overclocking -- I rarely do demanding gaming, mostly productivity apps and managing large...

Question Going to hardware RAID on ASUS B450M, Ryzen 5 + AMD BIOS

Win 10 64 and apps are on a SATA SSD, all data on two 8TB HDDs RAID-1 mirroring via Storage Space. I had used (and preferred) hardware RAID on previous Intel systems, but when I put this one together 6 months ago I wanted to keep things simple and went with AHCI SATA (CMS enabled, so not full...

    Comments on proposed PC build?

What with laptops and tablets and smartphones, I haven't upgraded my desktop -- a very old MSI 7666 Xpower with 6GB and a Radeon 5700 – since adding a SSD boot drive a few years ago. Needs: I was once but (obviously) now am NOT much of a gamer, do NOT have overclocking or video editing in...

JMicron ESATA on MSI XPower: Port multiplier?

Thanks, will look into that card

JMicron ESATA on MSI XPower: Port multiplier?

The JMB362 ESATA controller on this MSI-7666 mobo, AMIBIOS 1.7, should provide port multiplication for a single-cable connection from the back panel to two HDDs in an external ESATA dock. (NB, this is *not* the mobo's Intel ICH10R southbridge SATA, which I know doesn't do so.) So say JMicron...

Switching external HDD between ESATA and USB3

I use two bare 3TB drives for backup and on/offline storage on an MSI X-power mobo, Win10. Normally I use them via E-SATA (AHCI on one of the mobo's Intel ports, not its Marvell or JMicron). Two questions: 1) When they are both in the Thermaltake BlacX Duet dock, only one is seen by the BIOS...

    Choosing controller for SSD

I'm installing a 256GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD as boot drive on a MSI 7666 Xpower. The other drive is a 7200 RPM SATA 3 HDD. The mobo has two nominally 6Gb/sec SATA ports off its Marvell 91xx controller, and six nominally 3Gb/sec ports off the Intel ICH10. It's my understanding that at times the...

Moving Win7 install from RAID 0 to 1

Thanks, Nikolay. I figured the RAID info down in firmware would be invisible (or at least irrelevant) to Windows, but wanted to make sure.

Moving Win7 install from RAID 0 to 1

I have Win 7 x64 and a lot of apps installed on a stripe set of two 1-TB SATA HDDs, maintained by the Marvell drivers on a MSI 7666 mobo. I'd like to reconfigure them as a RAID 1 mirror set without a complete reinstall. I have other drives available for a system image and/or an Acronis transfer...

    Win7 kills MS-7104 (PM8M-V)

This mobo with 2.8GHZ P4, 2GB of PC3200, and AwardBIOS 6.00 runs WinXP with all updates just fine, up and stable for months on end, and *should* be able to run Win7 32-bit. But something in Win7 -- no BSOD, no "Windows is shutting down," just suddenly power off. It has happened once late in the...
