oh... i assumed that if it wouldn't let me upgrade to 11, there was no way to directly install it without secure boot already enabled. so i started with 10. it previously wouldn't install 11 from my external drive either, though, so i don't know what else to do

Should I relocate everything to plug into ethernet for this? I've been doing everything externally, including a usb wifi adapter because I don't have a cable long enough to plug directly into the modem, and the location of the connection is in the worst place possible.
