Are there any form factor guidelines other than "slim" ?

Are laptop dvd drives swappable ? I have an older Dell Vostro 1500 and the dvd drive sometimes just sits and makes noises. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I am setting this up for my kids, since I have a new Asus g750 for myself.

I have an Asus P8Z77-v mobo. All the fan headers are 4pin. My fans are all 3pin. One fan a CoolerMaster SickleFlow has an adapter to connect to psu via 4pin molex connector. Can the 3pin connectors be plugged into the 4pin headers?
