Thanks redgarl, I have tried running 3d mark extreme(ultra) which would require the card to kick on but it doesnt, same with a select few games I have tried that I know scale well such as BF4.

did you ever find the fix to this problem? I have the same issue and have yet to find a solution or a way to fix it myself! my 660's in sli got higher fps than these two cards are getting and according to 290x benchmarks online my crossfire setup is getting less fps than a 290x single card.

your cpu is fine, however if you have the money upgrading would be good as well! The good thing is, you can always buy the cards and upgrade your other components now or later and still use your cards! So its basically up to you whether you want to do it now or later! as far as your system specs...
