LAN stands for local area network, which can only be used for computers connected to the same router/modem. You have to connect to your ISPs (service provider's) network. Go to your computer's network settings and you should find it.

You can either hook the router up to a modem and run wifi or an ethernet cable through that, or you can wire either the desktop or laptop (why not both!) directly into the router via ethernet cable(s).
